Plating

What is Plating in Jewelry?

What is Plated Jewelry? Plated jewelry refers to jewelry that has gold, silver, rhodium, or any other precious metal plated over the base metal. As a result, the object is not "solid" gold; rather, it is analogous to a painted cover over another substance.

Gold and Silver Plating

Necklaces, bracelets, and rings, among other pieces of jewelry, can be gold or silver plated. We strip, clean, and polish the parts to remove as many scratches and dents as possible before plating them. We coat the object in many layers of gold plating, allowing it to cure between layers. Depending on the number of layers and the size of the object, this service can take up to three weeks. Several times during the silver plating procedure, each item is immersed in a bath and entirely submerged. Plating cannot be performed on any non-metal components because the procedure is harmful to things containing leather, gemstones, wood, or porcelain.

Rhodium Plating

Rhodium plating is commonly used to coat silver or gold products, ensuring that they retain a bright and beautiful luster. Rhodium is very useful for jewelry since it is hypoallergenic and resists tarnishing. The plating of rhodium is a complicated procedure that involves electricity, an ultrasonic cleaner, and acid baths. Before being activated in these electro and acid baths, an item must be carefully cleaned and polished. The rhodium then forms a molecular link with the metal of the piece. Though rhodium plating is relatively long-lasting, it is not a permanent process; the items should be re-plated on a regular basis. The amount of time between replating depends on how frequently the piece is used, with the individual's body chemistry and the items the piece comes into contact with influencing its durability. For many years, European Fine Jewelry and Watches has assisted in providing jewelry plating services to our clients.
